Just watched SHPS Kasaragodu - ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಹಿ. ಪ್ರಾ. ಶಾಲೆ ಕಾಸರಗೋಡು. The movie is really good and it reminded me of two things:
One that me and brother used to get jealous at our cousins when we were kids because they got to study in Kannada medium school.
Second an incident that happened in high school. ISRO conducts science related competitions every year and my school was participating in them. It was an essay competition. My class teacher selected 2 for both Kannada(girls who had studied in Kannada medium till 7th standard) and English. And later asked me if I wanted to try for English. I asked if I could try for Kannada since I was better and comfortable writing in Kannada than English even though I had studied in English medium throughout my life. But she not only refused but made a stupid speech saying there is no use in knowing Kannada, It wouldn't help you make a living out of it etc etc. The worst part is she said that now we should focus on English and after many years if we want we can support Kannada by roaming on streets holding Kannada flags. I remember going home and crying. Even though my school supported writing in Kannada that particular teacher didn't. In fact it is in the same school that my Kannada writing skills were nurtured. I know English is important but that doesn't mean you insult if anyone loves Kannada.
I know I could have written this in Kannada. But many skip posts when they are written in Kannada. I remember when I sent a link to my blog to a friend he directly refused to read it because it was in Kannada(Not that he couldn't read, it was his mother tongue). I want everyone to read this especially such people.
