Gold Problem

It was evening. My father was about to go for a walk and asked me to join him. On the way he kept asking me some puzzles. One of them was:

There is a person who will work for seven days. His salary is a piece of gold whose length is 7 inches. But it should not be given on the seventh day. His salary for one day is 1 inch of gold. The salary for each day should be given on the same day itself. But there is only one piece of gold. It can be made into pieces and given to him but the condition is that it can be made into only three pieces. At the end of first day he should have 1inch of gold, at the end of second day he should have 2 inches and so on. So how would you divide the 7 inch gold piece?

I thought for a while.......... I got the answer..... The gold should be made into pieces of lengths 1 inch, 2 inch and 4 inch. I told the answer and my father asked me to explain........ So I started my explanation...... The first day he should be given the 1 inch piece. The second day take back the 1 inch and give him the 2 inch piece and give back the 1 inch piece on third day. Take back both the pieces on the fourth day give him the 4 inch one. Give the 1 inch piece on the fifth day but take back it on the sixth day to give the 2 inch one. And at last on the seventh day give back the 1 inch piece.

My father said the answer was right. But suddenly I got a doubt....................

"What if he goes on spending the gold as he gets it??!!"
